Rome is an amazing and romantic city that has a lot to offer its visitors. Whether you are interested in culture, music, history, art or architecture, there are delights to please everyone that visits this fantastic city. Here are some of the top things to do when in Rome.

The Colosseum

One of the most famous attractions in Rome is the Colosseum as it is of both historical and architectural interest. The original purpose of this structure was a gladiatorial arena. It has suffered damage over the years, predominantly due to earthquakes, and is currently undergoing renovation to restore some sections to their former glory.

The Piazza di Spagna and The Spanish Steps

The Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps have attracted visitors since their construction in the eighteenth century. This is a great spot for people-watching and its vantage point gives great views over the city.

The Pantheon

This 2000-year-old church was once a temple and is the best-preserved monument in Rome. It was built by Hadrian over the site of an earlier temple and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome as people are drawn to its colossal dimensions and the amazing dome. In fact, until the fifteenth century the dome was the largest in the world and it remains the largest unsupported dome to this day.

Tour the Museums

Rome is home to many world-famous museums, each with something different to offer its visitors. Just some of the museums you may choose to visit include the Ara Pacis, the Capitoline Museums, the Museum and Crypt of Capuchins and the Museo Della Civiltà Romana.

Trevi Fountain

When people think of Rome, the Trevi Fountain is one of the first things that springs to mind as it is possibly the most famous fountain in the world. This rococo style fountain is hidden away in a tiny piazza, yet still manages to attract huge crowds of people wanting to throw in coins and make a wish.

Art Galleries

Rome is an art lovers dream and there is a fantastic selection of galleries to choose from. Suggestions include the Borghese Gallery, Doria Pamphilj Gallery, MAXXII and Palazzo Massimo alle Terme.

A Night at the Opera

If you enjoy musical entertainment and cultural experiences, then a night at the opera house in Rome is an absolute must. Teatro dell’Opera di roma is the perfect destination for a wonderful evening of music. Follow this with a meal in one of the many quality eating establishments in the city for the perfect night.

Basilica di San Pietro

Translated as Saint Peter’s Basilica, the building was consecrated on the 18th November 1626 on the site of another basilica that was built approximately 1,300 years earlier. For anyone who is interested in religious history, architecture and culture, a visit here is a necessity. This is probably the most spectacular cathedral of the many that Italy can boast and you can choose to explore the cathedral yourself or enjoy an informative guided tour. There is a strict dress code that visitors are expected to adhere to, so no revealing clothing please.

If you are planning to visit Rome, then make space in your itinerary for each of these attractions as no visit to Rome would be complete unless you have experienced these wonderful sights and activities.
